Install guide

From download to your first image.

Three pieces, in this order: Nomad Studio, ComfyUI to generate the images, and — optionally — LM Studio for the AI writing help. Pick your system.

Nomad Studio

Windows 10 or 11 · 64-bit
  1. Download the Windows package

From the latest release on GitHub, download NomadStudio-…-windows-x64.zip. It already contains everything Nomad Studio needs, Python included — nothing else to install.

  2. Extract it

Right-click the ZIP › Extract All… and choose a folder of your own, such as Documents. Avoid Program Files and folders synced by OneDrive.

  3. Double-click NomadStudio.bat

The first time, Windows may ask whether to run a file downloaded from the internet: confirm with Run (or More info › Run anyway). A small console window opens minimised and your browser opens Nomad Studio at http://localhost:5123.

On Windows the setup wizard can do the next two parts for you: if ComfyUI or LM Studio are missing it offers to install them — the official ComfyUI portable for your graphics card, and the LM Studio installer — and starts them. The steps below are the same thing done by hand.

ComfyUI

Required · generates the images

Use the official ComfyUI Portable: a folder with its own Python that you run with a double-click.

  1. Download the build for your graphics card

From the ComfyUI releases page, download the portable .7z for your card: NVIDIA (most users), AMD or Intel. It is about 2 GB.

  2. Extract it with 7-Zip

Install 7-Zip if you don't have it, then right-click the file › 7-Zip › Extract here. Put it on a drive with room to spare: image models take 10–25 GB each.

  3. Start it

Open the extracted folder and double-click run_nvidia_gpu.bat (or run_amd_gpu.bat / run_intel_gpu.bat). When the console shows To see the GUI go to: http://127.0.0.1:8188 it is ready. Leave that window open while you work.

You don't need to download any model by hand: Nomad Studio's setup wizard detects what ComfyUI already has and downloads what each engine is missing.

LM Studio

Optional · AI writing help and image description

Only the flows that write or rewrite prompts, chat, or describe images use it. Everything else works without it.

  1. Install LM Studio

Download the Windows installer from lmstudio.ai and run it.

  2. Start its local server

Open LM Studio, go to the Developer tab and switch the server on. It listens on port 1234. Or, from a terminal:

    lms server start
  3. Let Nomad Studio pick the models

The setup wizard recommends language models measured with Nomad Studio and downloads the one you choose through LM Studio.

First run · every system

The setup wizard does the rest.

The first time Nomad Studio opens, a short wizard walks you through it. Everything can be changed later in Settings.

  1. Language

    English, Español, 中文 or 한국어.

  2. ComfyUI

It checks ComfyUI and, if it isn't where expected, searches this computer and your local network for it. On Windows it can also start or install it for you.

  3. Image engines

It reads which model files ComfyUI already has, shows which engines are ready, and downloads what is missing.

  4. LM Studio and its models

Optional. It checks the server and offers the recommended language models.

  5. Folders and image format

Where your images go, and PNG or space-saving WebP. Your data lives in ~/Nomad Studio, outside the program folder, so updating or deleting Nomad Studio never touches it.

  6. Your profile

A name and an avatar — and you're in.

ComfyUI on another computer? Start it with --listen so it accepts connections from your network, and the wizard will find it. Several Nomad Studio installs can share the same ComfyUI and LM Studio.
Updates. Download the new version from GitHub and open Settings › Updates › Update from file. Nomad Studio checks it, backs up your data, switches to the new version and restarts — and goes back to the previous one by itself if the new one doesn't start. Your data lives in ~/Nomad Studio and is never touched.
